Senior Land Steward
Part-time/Seasonal Job Opportunity

The Lancaster County Conservancy has been preserving land in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 49 years. The Conservancy’s Stewardship Program works to ensure, restore, and enhance the ecological function and visitor experience of all Lancaster County Conservancy’s 46 nature preserves (encompassing 5,000+ acres) and 56 conservation easements (encompassing an additional 900+ acres) through landscape planning, design, project development and implementation, and routine maintenance, while continually developing the Program with professional staff and volunteers.
The Lancaster County Conservancy is seeking an outgoing individual experienced in equipment operation and transport, use of power-tools, and use of hand-tools for independent maintenance of day use areas and nature preserves. The Senior Land Steward works under the direct supervision of the Preserves Manager and is responsible for routine maintenance (primarily), project implementation assistance (secondarily), and volunteer work day assistance (thirdly). Although most work will be performed in the field, some shop or office work may also be required.
Primary responsibilities include:

  • Mowing, trimming, pruning, and weeding
  • Equipment and tools operation and maintenance
  • Trash cleanup
  • Trail maintenance
  • Invasive plant species removal
  • Project implementation assistance
  • Volunteer work day assistance

Qualifications:

  • Must have at least 3 years of experience in natural landscaping or similar trade with independent operation of tools and equipment
  • Comfort, knowledge, and ability to work outdoors for long periods of time, even in adverse conditions
  • Ability to perform tasks according to instructions and to work independently with minimal supervision or as part of a team
  • Ability to perform physically laborious tasks
  • Strong conservation ethics and a strong passion for LCC’s mission
  • Knowledge of natural resource management concepts and techniques such as natural landscaping
  • Experience operating and maintaining a chainsaw and other gas/electric power tools (Chainsaw operator certification preferred) including large equipment (i.e. tractor, brush hog, etc.)
  • Ability to identify plants
  • Experience with reading and interpreting maps
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Experience providing for risk management (WFR/CPR/First Aid certification preferred)
  • Must be able to manage time and prioritize tasks
  • Must be willing and able to work some weekend days
  • Must possess a valid PA driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Must provide proof of compliance with PA child abuse background checks (LCC willing to assist)

This is a part-time, seasonal position (30 weeks at 30 hours per week). Office is located in Lancaster, PA but daily field work is distributed across Lancaster and York Counties. A company vehicle is provided for travel to and from work sites. The Senior Land Steward reports to the Preserves Manager. Associate Land Steward
Part-time/Seasonal Job Opportunity
The Lancaster County Conservancy has been preserving land in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 49 years. The Conservancy’s Stewardship Program works to ensure, restore, and enhance the ecological function and visitor experience of all Lancaster County Conservancy’s 46 nature preserves (encompassing 5,000+ acres) and 56 conservation easements (encompassing an additional 900+ acres) through landscape planning, design, project development and implementation, and routine maintenance, while continually developing the Program with professional staff and volunteers.
The Lancaster County Conservancy is seeking an outgoing individual who is interested in building toward a green-collar career. The Associate Land Steward should be engaged in at least one of the following subject areas: natural resource management, forestry, sustainability, ecological/landscape design, geography, or relevant trades (list is not meant to be extensive; other subject areas may also be considered relevant). Responsibilities may include performing general grounds maintenance, trail maintenance, tree grove care, and boundary demarcation. This position is meant to provide hands-on training for an individual aspiring to work in conservation land management.

This is a part-time, seasonal (mid-May – mid-August) position (13 weeks at 30 hours per week). Office is located in Lancaster, PA but daily field work is distributed across Lancaster and York Counties. A company vehicle is provided for travel to and from work sites. The Land Steward reports to the Preserves Manager.
